Moses Austin was born on 4 October 1761 at Durham, Middlesex County, Connecticut, son of Elias Austin and Eunice Phelps.
At age 23, Moses married Mary Brown . Mary and Moses were married on Wednesday, 28 September 1785 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
Moses Austin was a successful lead mine operator in Virginia. His Virginia mine ran dry in 1796.
Moses obtained written permission from the Spanish Minister to the United States for he and his family to lead a party of his miners and slaves to far Missouri in search for new mines. When he reached St. Louis, he and his group dressed in their best and deliberately rode right past the Spanish commandant's's house. In doing so, he was perceived as a man of great importance and social status in the Spanish Government. The result was, he was granted a square league of land, the lead mines at "Mine A. Burton", and the right to settle thirty families from the United States. His settlement was the first permanent settlement in Washington County, Missouri.
In 1804, he reclaimed his American citizenship and founded the Bank of St. Louis, but in 1818, there was a great depression, and all the US Banks were closed. This bankrupt Moses.
But he wasn't a quitter. After discussing it with his son Stephen, he set out alone to follow the Spanish Frontier again, this time to San Antonio de Bexar, Texas. General Arredondo had given the Spanish Governor of Texas, Martinez, strict orders not to permit Americanos to enter Texas under any circumstances. Once Moses admitted his American citizenship, Governor Martinez would not even look at Moses' papers showing he was a loyal Spanish Citizen as well. He was ordered to leave immediately or he would be arrested.
As he was leaving the palace, he ran into an old friend of his, Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop. Felipe was a Hollander, who, like Moses chose Spanish citizenship, and he was very influential in San Antonio and with Governor Martinez. Felipe argued Moses' case, and within a week Governor Martinez signed a petition allowing Moses to bring a band of American colonists to Texas.
On the treacherous trip back to Missouri, he ran out food, was robbed, and caught cold. He made it home, but just in time to die. He begged Stephen to pursue his Royal Commission to settle three hundred families in Texas.
Moses Austin died on 10 June 1821 at Hazel Run, St. Francis City, Missouri, at age 59.

Stephen Fuller Austin

Stephen Fuller Austin was born on 3 November 1793 at Austinville, Wythe County, Virginia, son of Moses Austin and Mary Brown.
Stephen spent four years in the best private schools in Connecticut, he later graduated from Transylvania College in Kentucky. In his teens, he was elected to the Territorial Legislature of Missouri. He worked in his father's general store; managed his father's lead manufacturing business; he was the director of the Bank of St. Louis his father established; circuit judge of the first judicial district of Arkansas; and editor of a newspaper in New Orleans. He had also already staked out land in Arkansas.
When his father was dying, he promised his father he would continue his work to establish a colony of 300 Americans in Texas. Many bios of Stephen's life say he was reluctant to follow his father in this endeavor. However, with the depreciation of American land values in 1818, which nearly bankrupt many American Banks, Stephen viewed this as an opportunity. While the American land system sold land for often depreciating revenue, the Spanish land system rewarded colonists. With his father's grant, he had a much better chance of succeeding in Spanish Territory than American Territory.
Stephen was the first and most successful of many Empresarios in Texas. He led the way for many more to follow.
There are many great bios about Stephen and his accomplishments on line, one of such is http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/AA/fau14.html So I am going to give you a little information about the man instead (taken from the Lone Star - a History of Texas and Texans)
He was the greatest colonial proprietor in North American history. But he was also something more. He was a politician of exquisite skill, who seemed to understand almost any kind of mind he came in contact with -- Mexican, planter, or the various frontier types. He found out people's weaknesses and worked on them, with the utter pragmatism the Anglo-American frontier mentality called forth. Austin had no ideology, and he was entirely sincere; otherwise, he could not have survived an incredible succession of Mexican Royalists, Imperialists, Republicans, and dictators. He began in Missouri as a businessman, but he became something immensely more important: he was a visionary, capitalist, developer, and Father of his People, all in one. Somewhere along the line, Austin lost interest in his personal fortune and developed an obsession to redeem Texas from it's wilderness state by means of the plow alone, in spreading over it North American population, enterprise, and intelligence. Austin had no notion - not for many years - of taking the land away from Mexico. What his Mexican colleagues, totally lacking in such instincts, could never comprehend was his sincere and boundless joy at the destruction of the wilderness. Each crashing tree along the Brazos gave Austin pleasure; each mud-paved town hammered together in the middle of nowhere instilled in him a sense of destiny fulfilled.
His final service to Texas was a short term as Secretary of State after an unsuccessful bid for the presidency of the newly independent Republic in September 1836.
Autin never married and had a family. This is where his line ends. He devoted his life to his cause.
Stephen Fuller Austin died on 27 December 1836 at Peach Point, Columbia County, Texas, at age 43. He was buried at Gulf Prairie Cemetery, Peach Point, Columbia County, Texas; On Oct 18, 1910, he was moved to the highest point in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. His grave site is located in the Republic Hill Section, Section 1, Row L, Number 20. You can't miss it. His tomb is surrounded by a bronze statue of "The Father of Texas."
