     Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole (This account by granddaughter, Marie Sutton Stewart)
Emma Candace Cole and Joseph H. Boyd were married the 6th day of November 1897 in Fort Smith, AR. They made their first home in the Boyd Flats area of the Indian Territory. The Boyd Cemetery is in this area. Joseph (Pa) was born January 20, 1846 in Crawford County, Arkansas. During the Civil War he served with Company "L", 2nd Arkansas Cavalry (Union) from October 10, 1863 until August 20, 1865. His father, David E. Boyd, according to history records, was the first white man to set foot on the soil of what is now Van Buren, Arkansas. Pa owned a great deal of timber land, in the Briar Creek area where he owned and operated a sawmill, His had been a most colorful life. Before he married Emma, the 14 year old dark haired beauty, born in Washington County, Arkansas, July 12, 1883, he had families with four other women, Well, his first wife Jane Timpson, was stricken ill and died very shortly after they were married. The other three had several children by him. Emma's parents were Jasper Newton and Molly (Scott) Cole, who had brought their family, as well as his mother, to the Indian Territory and settled at Star Ford on Lee Creek around1895. Jasper Newton's father, Newton Cannon Cole. had a brother, James, who was a deputy United States Marshall under Judge Parker, He was allegedly kin to the infamous James brothers through their mother, Zarelda, this has never been confirmed to our branch of the family. In the early 1900's the Coles moved to Long, where they lived the remainder of their lives. They are buried in the Long Community Cemetery. Joseph & Emma (Cole) Boyd moved to what is now Long in 1900. Before moving his family, Pa moved his sawmill to the Long area, cleared about five acres, sawed the timber he cut and used it to build the Boyd House. At that time, as near as can be determined the only other settlers in the area was the Peter Long family who had a tannery and a grist mill along the branch. In 1902 the town was platted and named for Peter Long. In the early days of Long Pa was a farmer. He also owned and operated a general store and a blacksmith shop as well as his sawmill. The Boyd Home was located on Block 10 and was the first house in the area to be painted. It was painted pink.
There were two children born to the Boyd's prior to their move: Rosa born in 1899, and Minnie in 1900. Five more children were born in Long. Lillian, 1902; Theodore, 1904; Ruth, 1906; William, 1908; and Jasper Newton, 1911: "Joe" Boyd 24 November 1912. He is buried in the Boyd Cemetery beside his daughter Minnie who died in 1904 and his previous wife Minnie Henson Boyd who died in childbirth with her second child Lewis, leaving their small son, Joseph Monroe (Jody). When her husband died, leaving Ma, as a 29 year old widow, with a large family to raise her only income was a small Civil War widow's pension for which it took volumes of affidavits and records to be able to verify her eligibility. She and the children continued to farm to supplement their income. Ma Boyd lived in the original house until it burned in August 1954 another house was moved in just north of the original site. She lived there with her son Bill until her final illness. Ma Boyd passed away April 13, 1966. She was laid to rest beside her daughter Lillian who died in 1919, making four generations of her family to be buried there. The Boyd's oldest son Ted died a violent death in 1947. He left five children. His oldest son C.G. was shot down over France while making a parachute jump during WWII, He died soon afterward. Joe & Emma Boyd's other four children have now gone. In 1973 Block 10 was purchased from the two sons by Mr. and Mrs Donald Stewart.
     Joseph H. Boyd was born on 20 January 1846 at Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas, son of David E. Boyd.

     Joseph H. Boyd died on 24 November 1912 at Long, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, at age 66. He was buried at Boyd Cemetery.

     Rosa Emma Boyd was born on 26 May 1899 at Liberty, Sequoyah District, Indian Territory, daughter of Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole.
     At age 19, Rosa married Roy Henry Tassey . Roy and Rosa were married on Friday, 22 November 1918 at Sequoyah County, Oklahoma.
     Rosa Emma Boyd died on 15 October 1996 at North Hollywood, California, at age 97.

     
     Minnie Boyd was born on 9 December 1900 at Liberty, Sequoyah District, Indian Territory, daughter of Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole.
     Minnie Boyd died on 4 May 1904 at Long, Sequoyah District, Indian Territory, at age 3.

     
     Lillian Boyd was born on 10 October 1902 at Long, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, , daughter of Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole.
     Lillian Boyd died circa 1920.

     
     Theodore Boyd was born on 1 September 1904 at Long, Sequoyah Disitrct, Oklahoma Indian Territory, son of Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole.
     At age 20, Theodore married Ira Pinkerton .
     Theodore married (?) Buffington .
     Theodore married Beertha Seabolt . Beertha and Theodore were married; They had 3 living daughters.
     Theodore Boyd died on 20 December 1947 at Belfonte, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, at age 43; Ted and his wife were at a social function at the Belfonte School. A man walked behind Ted and shot him in the back.

     
     Ruth Mary Ellen Boyd was born on 12 October 1906 at Long, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, daughter of Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole.
     At age 14, Ruth married Edgar Grant Sutton . Edgar and Ruth were married on Tuesday, 9 August 1921 at Roland, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma.
     Ruth Mary Ellen Boyd died on 14 September 1995 at Tulare, Tulare County, California, at age 88.

     
     William H. Boyd was born on 24 November 1908 at Long, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, son of Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole.
     William H. Boyd died on 20 June 1982 at Long, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, at age 73.

     
     Jasper Newton Boyd was born on 5 April 1911 at Long, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, son of Joseph H. Boyd and Emma Candace Cole.
     Jasper Newton Boyd died on 23 August 1981 at Sallisaw, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, at age 70.

     Ira Jasper King died on 8 May 1961 at Delano, Kern County, California, at age 76.

     Myrtle Mabel Frasier died on 25 May 1990 at Sallisaw, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, at age 92. She was buried at Maple Cemetery.

     
     George Newt Cole was born on 8 June 1919 at Maple Community, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, son of Henry Clarence Cole and Myrtle Mabel Frasier.
     George Newt Cole died on 13 October 1986 at Sallisaw, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, at age 67. He was buried at Maple Cemetery.
