William Eugene (Tucker) Hellyer Jr. was born on 25 July 1895 at Lakewood, Eddy County, New Mexico, son of William Eugene Hellyer and Elizabeth Alice Larremore. His Grandmother Larremore nicknamed him Tucker because he had such a fat body when he was a baby and it reminded her of the song, "Old Dan Tucker".
At age 24, William married Cora Bell Pruit . William and Cora were married on Sunday, 15 February 1920 at Decker, Texas County, Texas.
William Eugene (Tucker) Hellyer Jr. died on 11 February 1993 at Terrell, Texas, at age 97. He was buried at Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico. His Obituary reads: Funeral Meditation for WILLIAM EUGENE (TUCKER) HELLYER July 25, 1895-February 11, 1993 Service: 10:OO A.M., February 15, 1993
Tucker Hellyer was a man who left a mark just about as big as a man can make on the world we know. He was a cheerful, friendly man with the distinction of taking on rock-tough assignments and meeting obstacles head-on, with a style all his own. That truth was known by many. Some have called him "One In A Million". He took a lot out of life, and he put a lot back into it as well.
He began with dreams, dreams started in his pioneer family before him, and he expanded on those dreams to build enterprises that became a place known far and wide. Today, many people know of his life and his accomplishments.
The many projects which he took on and developed have contributed in many ways to all of this region, and we are grateful for its contributions to the life and well-being of our area.
Tucker's contributions as a man run long and picturesque. Take the place where he began life, the town of Seven Rivers. Seven Rivers has a reputation in the history of our area of having been a wild and woolly town. And yet, we know that many good people, like Tucker's parents, lived there. I am reminded that when the people of Jesus' day found out that Jesus had been born in Nazareth, they, too, thought Nazareth had an interesting reputation, and they said of Jesus, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Just as the greatest life in all the world came out of Nazareth, so, too, did a mighty good man named Tucker Hellyer come out of Seven Rivers, New Mexico.
Think of Tucker as a boy of 13, going off to the Runyan Ranch up in the Sacramentos, to be a cowboy. Imagine the kind of men he learned from, laughed with, worked with---tough, self-sufficient cowboys of the real Old West, the kind of men whose word was their bound, who put everything on the line, day after day. Imagine the stories he heard from them, the days of hard, persistent work he learned from them, the way they stayed with the job until it was done. Back then, it was all in a day's work. Today, we see those pioneering individuals as living legends, the heroes of American folklore. Tucker was a part of that world, and it showed through all the rest of his life.
Imagine him in the cold of a dark night in Europe, when he was an infantryman in World War I. Some might call that "The Greatest War", but I expect that to Tucker and his fellow soldiers it was anything but great. Yet he did his job there, and he did it well. I wonder what he thought when he was sent home. What things had he seen? What memories did he carry?
Imagine his wedding day, February 15, 1920, when he married Cora. He probably smiled and thought, "I’ve made it this far, I’ve survived a lot of things, and now this is a great time in my life". He and Cora had many wonderful years together, and their love is now reflected back in their family.
Imagine all those years with drilling machinery, hard, dusty days, and sometimes frustrating days and nights. I can see this big, strong man, his clothes dusty, his hands covered with grease and oil, his mind thinking, "Now how can I fix this thing?" I can see him working on the problem until the parts fit, the machinery chugged into life, and the job was accomplished. Tucker learned how to do almost anything mechanical, and his experience as a persistent man made him a man marked in your mind as a man you could count on. He sensed the needs of his clients, his friends and his neighbors, and he gave them the best he had for as long as it took until everything was right.
He was a man known and befriended by countless numbers of people. He was right at home wherever he was, whether it was bending down to shake the hand of a child on the streets of Carlsbad, drilling a shaft for oil, water, or potash, or befriending the nurses at his retirement home. Tucker had friends everywhere, and people knew him as a true original, a man who was one-of-a-kind.
As we have noted, in his early life he was as ranch boy, then a true cowboy. He explored and knew the mountains, the rivers, and the plains of our area. Later on in life, his favorite sports were hunting and fishing, and he loved every minute when he was caught up in these pursuits.
This was a man who enjoyed life and who drank deeply of what it had to offer him. When he was that soldier in World War I, he suffered major wounds as an infantryman, and he received an award for his military service.
Perhaps most of all, he loved people. He was kind, gentle, and fair, and he loved to help people.
So we have come here today to honor Tucker, before the symbol of his memory goes to its final resting place at Carlsbad Cemetery. What then can we say of him?
As we look at him, he was a man who left us quite a legacy. His vision, his persistence, and his confident, jovial attitude are all things we can admire. We can also see in his willingness to be a friend something of what we all should be.
The trouble with men who, like Tucker, are a little larger than life, is that we tend to forget that such individuals are real; that they have their own inner strugglings and burdens that ground away inside them. Tucker probably had his share of dry holes and mistakes in life as well as successes, and no doubt those troubles took their inner toll on him. He was as mortal as any of us, and no doubt, there were a few things in his life he probably wished he could have done differently.
But one thing we can say of him: he was true to his code, and somehow through it all the good things in his life meant for people shine brightly as the sun in the clear blue New Mexico sky.
Now, life takes on a different dimension for Tucker. Our Lord is the judge of us all, and we live with the hope that all who put their ultimate faith in him will inherit life eternal. Our prayer today is that Tucker knows the meaning of life eternal.
You see, along with everything else we may say of Tucker, we know that he was a man who understood that Christ is the Lord of all. And that means that one lifetime, one lifetime that was full of action and adventure here, is just not enough for him. There is more.
We understand something of God the Father when we remember the life lived almost 2,000 years ago by Jesus of Nazareth. One of the men Jesus chose to serve with him was named Simon, the big fisherman. Simon was a man who enjoyed life and was always willing to do big and exciting things, and yet he was a man who made mistakes along the way. Yet, Jesus said to him, "Come, follow me", and in his own way, Jesus said to him, in effect, "Simon, you aren't finished yet. I know there's some room for improvement. But I like your courage; I like your style. Follow me, and I'll take you to the biggest challenges and the biggest adventure of all. I'll even re-name you--you'll be called Peter, which means "The Rock". Are you ready, my friend?"
Somehow, I think of Simon-Peter when I think of what Tucker Hellyer meant to this life, and what lies on up ahead of him. Like Simon-Peter, Tucker was a courageous man. Like Simon-Peter, Tucker was willing to take on challenges. Like Simon-Peter, Tucker, too, is not finished, but more awaits him, probably more than we will ever know in this lifetime. And when, like Simon-Peter, Tucker does arrive at his final stage of completion, it is my hope that we shall one day see how his life has truly been transformed into something even greater than all the victories we remember him for here.
So, in this hour, we are sad, because one we have loved has left us, and his anchoring presence leaves a void of emptiness within us. Yet we dare to confess that there is something even greater than sorrow here, and that is joy, true joy, the joy beyond tears, for we know that Tucker lives on in the mystery of the One we call the Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord. And we will keep him alive here, in our spirits and in our memories, and we will be strong with the things he left us that will make us strong.
This is the spirit in which we give his remains back to the ground from which we all came, and to which all our earthly substance will finally return. A grateful country salutes him, a grateful people honors him, and we as individual persons remember him in love. And yet, ahead of him a loving Savior waits to welcome him, and guide him forward. PRAYER; Eternal Father, we thank Thee for all the good things that Tucker's life meant to people. And in memory of him, we pledge this day to live our lives with the guideposts of greatness he has left us. Tucker left his mark on this world, and each of us, in our own way, have been marked as well. Thank you Father, for giving us these gifts. In the name and in the spirit of Jesus Christ we pray, AMEN. Dr. Ed Williamson, United Methodist Minister, Carlsbad, New Mexico, February 14, 1993.
