Joy Lynn Wood
F, b. 10 May 1924, d. 4 June 1974
Joy Lynn Wood was born on 10 May 1924 at Ballinger, Runnels County, Texas.
At the age of 18, Joy married John Larry Bass Sr. , son of Daniel Edwin Bass and Dora Etta Larremore. They were married on Sunday, 21 February 1943 at Clifton, Greenlee County, Arizona.
Before Joy Lynn Wood's marriage to John Larry Bass, she had a steady boyfriend in Ballinger, Texas. His name was Therman Whitman and apparently they were very serious about each other, but he was drafted to go fight in World War II. She apparently came to Arizona, around Clifton, with her sister, and there she met John Larry Bass and married him. Personally, I (Betty Bass) think she married him on the rebound, thinking that Therman Whitman was not coming back from the war.
Joy Lynn Wood died on 4 June 1974 at Lordsburg, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, at age 50. She was buried at Mt. View Cemetery, Lordsburg, Hidalgo County, New Mexico. Her Obituary appeared in the LORDSBURG LIBERAL newspaper. The obituary reads:

Mrs. Bass lived in Ballinger, Texas until 1942 when she moved to Arizona, where she married John Bass on February 21, 1943, in Clifton, Arizona. They moved to Lordsburg where they have lived for the past thirty-four years.
Survivors include eight children; Mrs. Betty Rebb of Lordsburg, Naomi Westmoreland of Las Cruces, Leona Curtis of Sunnymead, Calif., Rebecca Bass of Albuquerque, N.M., Benjamin, John Jr., Dodie and Barbara Ann Bass, all of Mule Creek, N.M. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Wood of Ballinger, Texas, one brother, Sam Wood of Stephensville, Texas, two sisters, Mrs. Nell Baccus of Witchita Falls, Texas, and Gervis Stanley of Fort Worth, Texas. There was a brother and sister who preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Lordsburg. Funeral services were conducted in the Heather Chapel, Saturday morning, June 8, 1974, at 10:00 a.m. with John Atkinson officiating. Pallbearers were Don Curtis, Gary Westmoreland, Joe Bivens, Allen Brueckner, Tim Estes, and Edward Stewart. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.
Joy Lynn Wood From Betty Bass:
After Mama's oldest brother, Sam, left home Mama had to help with the raising of her younger brothers and sisters. Mama told me of how she had to pick cotton and black eyed peas. She picked so many black eyed peas that she could not stand to look at them, much less eat black eyed peas. Mama also talked about picking cotton during the summertime as she was growing up.

Since my mother, Joy Lynn Wood Bass was born in Ballinger, Runnels County, Texas, here is a little history: Ballinger is the county seat of Runnels County, Texas. Agriculture, oil and natural gas support this community on the Colorado River, originally known as Hutchins City. Here was here, in 1840, that Colonel John H. Moore is said to have given the Comanches their most costly defeat up to that time.
My mother was a Texas girl by heart. Her favorite songs were: "Waltz Across Texas", "San Antonio Rose", and the "Yellow Rose of Texas". She could whistle like a mockingbird, and I sure loved to hear her whistle. She was very young at heart, and I really miss her alot. She was my best friend as well as my mother.

An article about the car accident appeared probably in the newspapers of Casa Grande, Arizona, and the Silver City, New Mexico newspapers, and probably their obituaries appeared in the newspaper from Silver City, New Mexico.
One article reads as follows:
FATHER AND SON KILLED IN CAR ACCIDENT
A father and son from Silver City died Monday in a crash on Interstate 10 east of Casa Grande, Arizona.
Brandon Dirk Cotton, 44, of 1500 Raen Drive in Silver City and Brandon Lee Cotton, 23, of Phoenix were in one of the four vehicles involved in the 11:15 a.m. accident.
Both men were pronounced dead on arrival at a Tucson hospital, victims of what Arizona state police termed "massive injuries."
A passenger in their car, Jay C. Higgins, Jr., 35, of 1500 Raven Drive, was hospitalized with internal bleeding, severe head injuries, fractures and an abdominal injury.
University of Arizona Medical Center officials this morning declined to release information about Higgins' condition.
A tractor-trailer truck reportedly was westbound on the interstate highway, traveling 75 mph, when a left front tire of the tractor blew, causing the driver to enter the median and cross over to the east bound lanes.
The truck struck head-on the 1994 Subaru car containing the Cottons, according to police.
The driver of a third vehicle, traveling behind the Subaru, lost control and struck a fourth vehicle. Those two drivers suffered minor abrasions, police reported.
