     At age 31, Eugene married Sarah Phelps , daughter of Henry C. Phelps and Ester M. Sterling. Sarah and Eugene were married on Thursday, 19 May 1881 at Flint, Michigan.
     Eugene enlisted at age 15 in 4th New York Volunteers and served 3 years. His first wife, Martha Jane 'Jennie' Gilbert, was the daughter of Jarvis & Ann Gilbert.
     In the spring of 1866, Eugene came to Colorado with his father Clement W. Austin and together they opened a coal mine in Erie, the first in Weld county. It was sold two years later to the Boulder Valley Railroad company. In 1868 he went to Gilpin county where for two years he was engaged in mining at Central City, Black Hawk and Georgetown.
     Eugene was Mayor of Boulder three terms and served the city in many other ways. In 1868 he mined in Gilpin Co. When he settled in Boulder, he opened a meat market on Pearl St. Eugene also raised cattle and livestock. Later he entered the real estate business with his brother-in-law, Mr. Russell. They bought the area called North Boulder which included Lovers' Hill of 70 acres and laid out town lots. Eugene discovered that the shale clay around Boulder would be excellant for brick making. He and Mr. Russell organized Boulder Pressed Brick Co. Eugene was Pres. and General Manager. He was Past Comm of Nathaniel Lyon Post#5 GAR. He and his family lived at 1543 Pine, a home that Eugene built in 1875. In 1870 he settled in Boulder.' Survived by son Evan Austin of Allison, CO, son of his first wife Jennie, and son Russell P. Austin, son of his second wife Sadie. (Aug 2002 update).
     Mayor Eugene A. Austin died on 7 April 1927 at Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado, at age 77. He was buried at Columbia Cemetery, Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado.
