Joseph Cady was born on 28 May 1666 at Watertown, Massachusetts, son of Nicholas Cady and Judith Knapp.
At age 23, Joseph married Sarah Davis , daughter of Samuel Davis and Mary Waters. Joseph and Sarah were married on Tuesday, 18 October 1689 at Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Joseph Cady died on 29 December 1742 at Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 76. He was buried at Aspenwell Cemetery, Putman, Connecticut.
Joseph Cady Joseph moved to Groton with his parents when he was an infant, and he grew up in that town. At the age
of ten, he witnessed three attacks by the Indians during King Philip's War when the residents of Groton had to take refuge in the garrison houses and fight off the Indians until they were rescued. Later, Joseph served with his brothers, John, Daniel and Nicholas in the defense of the town against the Indian during the first of the French & Indian Wars (King William's War) in the early 1690s.
About 1690, Joseph married Sarah Davis in Groton. Sarah, the daughter of Samuel Davis and Mary Waters, was born August 12, 1667 in Groton.
In 1695, he was chosen constable of the town of Groton. He was granted permission by the general court to keep an inn which he operated from 1699 to 1701. In 1702, he disposed of his real estate in Groton and bought, for £20, 150 acres of land in Aspinock, later called Killingly, in the area which in 1855 became part of the new town of Putnam, CT. He moved his family to Aspinock and resided on his farm which was located north of the old Providence road in the east part of the township of Putnam, near the Rhode Island border. There are a number of Cady family landmarks in the area which lies west of the RI border, south of Route 44 and east of East Putnam Road. These include Cady Pond, Cady Brook, Cady Brook Road, etc.
During the years after he moved to Killingly, Joseph Cady became quite prosperous, and in 1714 he gave up his original log house and built a large, "pretentious" home where he and his descendants lived for many years. In 1895, the genealogist, Orrin Peer Allen, visited the old house and found it deserted and fast going to ruin. He described it as follows: "It had a frontage of two stories; in the center was the conventional stone chimney of the olden days, with the huge oven and fireplace in the kitchen, and fireplaces for the reception and family rooms. There were six rooms of varying sizes on each floor, of ample proportion and convenience." A short time before his death in 1788, Justice Joseph Cady sold the family homestead to Darius Session, Deputy Governor of RI, who made it his summer residence. A few years later during the revolution, this house was visited by many famous persons, including George Washington who was entertained there during one of his trips through the country. Next, the house became the property of Solomon Cleveland, and over the years, it had many other residents until it was finally deserted by 1893. It was, at that time, the oldest house in northeastern Connecticut.
Captain Cady was known for his giant frame and physical strength, and he had considerable influence over the Indians. He grew their sacred medicinal herbs on his farm, and for this reason, they considered his property neutral ground. At that time, the white settlers were in close contact with the neighboring Nipmuc Indians of the region. These Indians sometimes challenged the whites in sports and in contests of strength and agility. In these contests, the whites often proved superior to the redman, because their muscles had been hardened by clearing the forests, building rock walls and performing heavy manual labor on their farms. This story is told of him.
One day soon after his arrival in Killingly, Joseph was mowing brush at the foot of Mashentuck Hill when an Indian came from an adjoining wood and expressed a strong desire to try the skill of a white man in wresting. Joseph thought to himself that if he could throw the fellow it might operate to deter the Indians from hostilities against the settlements. Joseph dropped his scythe and began grappling with his competitor who struggled long and hard to throw him down. Both men struggled long and desperately, but Joseph at last prevailed and the Indian fell. Unfortunately, he fell among the brush which his antagonist had been cutting and one of the sharp stumps which, because of the force of the fall, pierced his skull, killing him instantly.
In 1708, Joseph Cady was chosen lieutenant of the train band (militia), and this was confirmed by act of the colonial assembly in that same year. In 1721, he was chosen captain. As a captain, Joseph Cady served in several expeditions to the north against the French and Indians.

Nicholas Cady

Nicholas Cady was born in 1627 at Bury Saint Mary's, Suffolk, England, son of Nicholas Cady and Grace Birede.
Nicholas married Judith Knapp , daughter of William Knopp and Judith Tue. Nicholas and Judith were married on Sunday, 14 June 1648 at Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
The word Cady is derived from Ca-dia, a Gaelic word, meaning the House of God. Cadie is an old Scottish word for messenger. As a surname, the word has been variously spelled, Cade, Caddie, Caddy, Cadye, Kayde, Cadey and Cady. Families of this name of some antiquity are found in counties Essex, Kent, Suffolk and Gloucester, England. The surname is found in the ancient Hundred Rolls and was not uncommon as early as 1450 in county Sussex.
Some published accounts state that Nicholas Cady came to America as a minor in 1630 with his future father-in-law, William Knapp, as a carpenter's apprentice. Nicholas was indeed a carpenter, as was William Knapp, who came from near Bury St. Mary, County Suffolk, England. As there were Cadys at Stoken Stein in the same county at that time, it might be reasonable to suppose that Nicholas Cady may have been bound out as an apprentice to Knapp, as was the custom of the time, and that he might have been allowed to migrate with his master to America. Still there is no proof. The very first undoubted record of Nicholas is a partnership with John, the son of William Knapp, dated October 8, 1645, when William Potter of Watertown sold Nicholas Cady and John Knapp his house in Watertown and 17 acres of land. Nicholas deeded his share to John Knapp in August, 1650.
Nicholas married Judith Knapp, the daughter of William Knapp and Judith Tue on 14 Jun 1648 in Watertown.. Judith was baptized in Bury St. Mary, Suffolk, England on July 16, 1629. They had eight children, all born in Watertown. The children were: John, Judith, James, Nicholas, Daniel, Ezekiel, Nicholas, and Joseph. He took the oath of fidelity in 1652. He sold his land and the family removed to Groton, Massachusetts in 1668.
In 1652, Nicholas, with others, took the oath of fidelity, and in 1653, he was listed as a member of the train band (militia) of Watertown under Captain Mason. On December 24, 1667 Nicholas Cady, carpenter of Watertown, exchanges house and land at Watertown with John Clary, carpenter. He must have removed to the frontier town of Groton, Massachusetts in the early part of 1668 for we find that on September 10, 1668, Nicholas Cady of Groton, planter, and his wife Judith, sold to G. Lawrence, six acres of land in Watertown and five acres of meadow in Cambridge.
On December 10, 1671, Nicholas Cady was surveyor at Groton. In 1673 and 1675, "Corporal Cady" was appointed one of the fence viewers. His name appears among others on the Indian rolls of land grants that were made before the town of Groton was burned by the Indians in 1676.
King Philip's war broke out in June 1675. During the war, major Indian assaults were made against several towns. The assault and destruction of the town of Groton took place on the 13th and 14th of March, 1678. Nicholas Cady was among the settlers who took refuge in a garrison house where they were eventually rescued by Captain Sills Lee with fifty dragoons and sixty carts. Groton was abandoned and the Cady family went to Cambridge.
Nicholas and his eldest son, John, signed as witnesses in the following petitions pertaining to this attack: "The Petition of Daniel Adams 21 April 1676 - At Groton on the 14th of March 1676 was Daniel Adams who was very helpful to the town of Groton with some others of Lancaster and the said Daniel Adams did kill one Indian at Mr. Willard's garrison. Witness, John Cadye and Samuel Woods. We who see him fall to the ground and not rise again. Witness Nicholass Cadye."
In view of the fact that he bought sixty acres of land in Cambridge from John Wincoll on May 14, 1678, it seems that he did not plan to return to Groton. However, in 1679, "for and in consideration of the natural affection and parental love for her", he deeded eleven acres of land in Groton to his only daughter, Judith, and her husband, Alexander Rouse. It is certain that by June 8, 1680 Nicholas had returned to Groton, since he was chosen surveyor on that date, and in December 1680, his name was on the list of the heads of families in Groton. In 1681, he paid a tax of just over 18s 2d. (Only one person in Groton was taxed more.) At the 1683 town meeting, he was again chosen as surveyor. Also in 1683, he bought fifteen acres of land in Groton. A 1683 record has been found which documents the sale of 6 acres of land in Cambridge, for £15, by Nicholas Cady of Groton, planter, to J. Winter. Also, on the same date he sold Simon Cooledge two pieces of land in Watertown, one of 25 acres and the other 6 acres. In 1685, Nicholas was chosen constable of Groton, and in 1686, he was again chosen surveyor.

Nicholas Cady died on 14 May 1712 at Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
