     Christina Marie Wapniarski died on 21 August 1981 at age 19 in a freak Shark attack. The family never found her body nor the boat. Christina Marie was with her boyfriend, and two friends whom all survived. A 19-year-old Springfield University student died after a boat she and three classmates were sailing capsized off the coast of Ormond Beach yesterday.

Christy Wapniarski drowned attempting to swim to shore after a shark attacked her. Randy Cohen, 19, who was stung several times by Portuguese men-of-war, was admitted to Halifax Hospital, Daytona Beach. Daniel Perrin, 20, and Tammy Ennis, age unavailable, were examined and released.

According to Cohen, who gave his account in a phone interview from his bed at the hospital, the four friends were sailing a 16 foot catamaran at about 5 p.m. when it sprung a leak and capsized in the Atlantic Ocean, four miles from shore.

They remained with the boat overnight, holding onto a floating pontoon to stay afloat to fight the current, because there were no life jackets.

At dawn they decided to swim toward shore. Wapniarski yelled a shark had attacked her. Cohen swam to find Wapniarski unconscious, but he saw no sign of a shark. Cohen remembers Ennis screaming.

“Randy, don’t go back there, you’ll get eaten too,” she warned.

Perrin checked for her pulse and couldn’t find one. Cohen tried towing her to shore, but within 20 minutes he became exhausted and released her.

The three survivors swam for six hours to reach land.
