DIED
Again that fell harvester has been among us and borne away one our strongest
and best. MARION BURLESON is dead. This was indeed a sad death, inexpressedly
sad, inasmuch as the deceased was the fourth and last son (excepting one who
now resides in New Mexico) of Uncle JOHNNY BURLESON-all four having been
gathered in within the short space of seven months. The deceased was stricken
down by heat, congestion on the brain following and death ending all. The
venerable father and brother with the bereaved family in their sorest grief
have the sincerest sympathy of all the community. The deceased was ever held in
the highest esteem. Manly sobriety, upright example and Christian charity were
the traits that characterized his Christian life. Were I to write his epitaph,
this would I say:
"He lived so that when death came stealhily,
That grim and certain harvester took all
Save a memory that sure shall live
As long as manhood, honor, virtue, right,
And sterling worth are held in just esteem."

In the BISBEE, ARIZONA newspaper, dated August 12, 1942, the article reads:
SECOND MYSTERIOUS DEATH IS PROBED AS INQUEST HELD IN CASE OF BOWLING ALLEY MAN
The second mysterious death at Fort Huachuca, Arizona within 48 hours was
reported yesterday as the body of Pvt. Johnnie Powell, 35, Negro, was brought
here for funeral arrangements after he died late Monday in the station
hospital.
Military authorities did not release details concerning the injuries of
which Powell died after he was found unconscious on the reservation Sunday
afternoon, but the death certificate stated that he received severe spinal
injuries.
The discovery of Powell's unconscious body followed by seven hours the
finding of the body of DANIEL E. BASS, 64, bowling alley employee who was
bludgeoned to death with a bowling pin, early Sunday morning.
VERDICT RETURNED-Meanwhile a coroner's jury after hearing testimony of
witnesses reached a verdict yesterday in lowell justice court that BASS met his
death at the hands of person or persons unknown, wielding a blunt instrument.
Time of death was set between the hours of 12 and 8 a.m. on Sunday.
Pvt, Odell White, employed at the bowling alley by Manager W.L. woodrow,
testified that he last saw "UNCLE JACK" BASS, as he was familiarly known by the
soldiers, alive at closing time: midnight Saturday.
White discovered the front door of the building partly open the next morning
at 8:10 when he came to work, and became alarmed when he noticed that the door
of a closet where cash was kept had been pried open, he stated.
NOTICED BLANKETS-He then noticed a mass of blankets under the bed of BASS'
room, noticed a bare foot protruding, and immediately notified several nearby
military policemen, he said.
Military and civil authorities, including Sheriff I.V. Pruitt, L. t.
Frazier, coroner, and Ben Baker, deputy sheriff, were then summoned.
A soldier who had never frequented the place before sat at a table in the
alley during the entire evening prior to the murder, and another man unknown to
White inquired just prior to the discovery of the body as to the opening time
of the establishment, White testified.
MANAGER TESTIFIES-W.L. Woodrow, the alley's manager, stated that an
unusually large amount of cash was kept on hand Saturday night, as it was
payday for one of the divisions. The money was kept in a register in a closet
near the victim's bed.
A total of $465 in cash was taken at the time of the murder, making robbery
the probable motive. Of the 30 watches which BASS had kept as security on money
lent to soldiers, three were also missing from the closet.
Capt. Charles A. Smith, medical officer who had been called to examine the
body at the time of its discovery, stated that death could have resulted from
either the multiple skull fractures dealt by six blows from the bowling pin, or
the resulting loss of blood.
NECK FRACTURED-The victim's neck was possibly broken by the blows, he said
after examining the body prior to the inquest.
Testimony discounted the supposition, caused by the fact that a shirt was
found knotted around the victim's neck, that BASS had been garroted. No
explanation was found for the belt tied around his left arm.
Testimony of the witnesses was not conclusive as to whether or not BASS had
struggled with the murderer, as the room and bed might have been upset in the
search for $200 in cash which BASS had cached in the bed.
There was also a question as to whether there had been one intruder or two.
Two bowling pins, one of them blood stained, were found near the body, and it
was thought highly improbable that one man hadd broken into the rear of the
building grasped a bowling pin in each hand, and groped down the dark alley to
the room where the janitor slept.
TOOLS SCATTERED-Tools from a box in the room were scattered about according
to the witnesses, but testimony bore out that none of them had been the lethal
weapon.
Other witnesses at the inquest were Pruitt, and several military policemen
from the fort who had been called by Pvt. White.
Members of the coroner's jury were Ben Baker, J.C. Hubbard, J.D. Warnock,
J.M. Patrick, Walter Muir, and Henry Keahey.
As Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, called in because the murder
occurred on the military reservation, and military authorities pressed the
search for the murderer or murderers, aided by prints and other clues. Funeral
services for BASS were held at 6 p.m. yesterday in Cloverdale, New Mexico, with
the Hubbard-Allison mortuary in charge.
Surving BASS are his wife, MRS. DORA E. BASS, Clifton; his mother, MRS.
SUSAN BASS, Cloverdale; three daughters, Mrs. John Day and Mrs. G.I. Pace, both
of Morenci, and Mrs. Ervin Goats, Animas, N.M; a son, JOHN L. BASS, Clifton; a
sister, Mrs. Lee Henderson, Cloverdale; and two brothers, Holland Bass,
Morenci, and Clyde Bass, Cloverdale.
Funeral arrangements for Powell, who is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jimmie
Powell, have not yet been completed but burial will probably be in Florale,
Alabama, his former home.

JACK BASS FOUND MURDERED SUNDAY NEAR FT. HUACHUCA
Word was received here Sunday by HOLLAND BASS, head watchman at the Bechtel

MR. BASS was found whith his head crushed in by a weapon said to have been a
bowling pin, in his bowling alley near Fort Huachuca, Sunday morning. Meager
reports coming to the sheriff's office here are that MR. BASS had been killed
and robbed. No other information has been received at this time.
HOLLAND BASS left immediately for Fort Huachuca. Leaving from Morenci Sunday

Robert Lafayette McDonald was born on 11 March 1844 at Jefferson County, Illinois, son of Thomas McDonald and Rachel Axley.
In 1861 the civil war between the states began. Lafe is quoted in the Frontier Times as saying "My people were Union in their sentiments. My father could never reconcile himself to the belief that it was right to rebel against the United States government. I was but eighteen years old at the time, but had imbibed my father's sentiments. But not knowing what to do, I first joined a ranger company enlisting under Captain Jim Hunter. This captain soon resigned and Capt. Wm. Banta was chosen as his successor. This was in 1862.
At age 20, Robert married Mahala Alwilda Joy , daughter of Wiley Joy and Hulda Elizabeth Frazier. Robert and Mahala were married on Sunday, 10 April 1864 at Gillespie County, Texas.
Shortly after his marriage to Mahala Alwiida Joy, he was told that, as a Ranger, he would be required to enlist as a regular soldier in the Confederate Army. Being of Union sentiment, he deserted along with Ed Jaynes and John Joy. But they were captured and taken prisoner on their way to Mexico. They escaped and eventually found their way to Mexico.
While in Mexico, they heard of a Mrs. Joy and her daughter being killed by Indians, but had no way of knowing for sure if this was his wife and mother-in-law.
Walking 700 miles on foot, they found their way to Union troops that were stationed near the mouth of the Rio Grande. With the troops, they went to Brazos Island and took a boat from there to New Orleans; where they enlisted in the Union army on March 11, 1865. Later that year, he was patrolling between Brownsville and Laredo when he heard of Lee's surrender and the end of the Civil War. He could now go home and find out if it was his wife that was murdered, and it was.
At age 25, Robert married Amanda Elizabeth (Bettie) Larremore , daughter of John Larremore and Amanda Elizabeth Conway. Amanda and Robert were married on Thursday, 18 March 1869 at Gillespie, Texas.

George Monroe McDonald died on 4 December 1934 at Optima, Texas County, Oklahoma, at age 61. He was buried at Guymon Cemetery, Texas County, Oklahoma. His obituary reads:
LAST RITES FOR GEO. MCDONALD
The Methodist Church at Optima was filled to capacity Friday afternoon after friends gathered to participate in the last rites for George McDonald, as a tribute to his splendid life, and in respect for his fine character. A sextet composed of Adrian Rea, Reggie Frank, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Holt, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Durst sang with beautifully splendid voices a favorite song of the deceased, "That Beautiful Home," and "Meet Me There," "That Beautiful Land," "Going Down the Valley," and "Rock of Ages." Pall bearers were C. J. Calvert, Lloyd Gregg, Vernon Zbinden, Carl Gebhart, and Henry Ansley.
The kind words of the Rev. W. H. Ellis brought peace and comfort to the hearts of the sorrowing ones both in the service at the church and the prayer at the home, together with the song, "Abide With Me," tenderly sung by the sextet.
Mr. McDonald was laid to rest in the Guymon Cemetery, leaving evidences and influences of a Christian life, and years of sacrifice and kindness, to his loved ones.
George Monroe McDonald, son of R. L. and Elizabeth Larremore McDonald, was born in Gillespie County, Texas on December 18, 1872 and finally passed from this life December 4, 1934, age 61 years, 11 months, and 14 days.
Moving with his parents, when a lad of eleven to Seven Rivers, New Mexico, he grew to manhood. Born on the frontier, he has always known the rugged life of the frontier. As a young man he entered the cattle business and continued this for some years.
His mother preceded him in death, November 17, 1903. His father, a much loved character of this community, passed away February 10, 1929. On June 22, 1898, he was married to Miss Donnie Sassin. To this sacred union God gave five children, one daughter and four sons. One son, Clarence, met a tragic death, September 30, 1929.
The family moved to Texas County, Oklahoma in May 1919, settling near Optima, Oklahoma, where they have since resided.
Death came quickly, and as he would hae chosen, while busy at work as foreman of the construction crew, at the Wright Lake, west of Optima. He was a loyal and devoted husband; a kind loving father; and a true and appreciative friend and neighbor. To know him was to love him. His happy jovial disposition, made him a friend to all, and his passing marks a very distinct loss to our community.
Those who will cherish his memory include the sorrowing wife; one daughter, Mrs. Grace Knowles and family, of Guymon, Oklahoma; three sons, Ralph and wife of Optima; Clifford and wife of Hooker, Oklahoma; and Gerald and family of Guymon, Oklahoma; three brothers, Walter McDonald and family of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Martin McDonald and family of Gila, New Mexico, Archie McDonald and family of Vaughn, New Mexico; one sister, Mrs. Ellie Cole and family of Munster, Texas; six grandchildren, and a host of friends join with these in their sorrow.
Living for those, God gave to his care, loving weith love that was thoughtful and rare. Toiling, that never his broad shoulders be bare, sharing whatever God gave him to share. Never afraid of the wind or the cold. Happy in spirit, courageous, and bold. Helping with gladness, the needy and old. Rich in those virtues, not measured by gold. Accepted, unflinching, the dread hand of fate. Never believed it was wholesome to hate. Deeply in love with his flock and his mate. Youthful, regardless of calendar's date. A lover of music, delighted in song. Singing and working the whole day long. Sturdy for justice, not willing that wrong. Should injure his dear ones, while he was so strong. Slipped away in a dear quiet way, never a word or phrase did he say. Gone to his rest, but not far away, a toiler, who tolled til the close of his day.

CARD OF THANKS
Words could never express the gratitude that is in our hearts for the many tender ministrations you have shown us in our recent sorrow. Your words and the beautiful flowers with their messages of sympathy and love will a cherished possession in our minds and hearts.
