     Richard served in August 1775 at Mythe County, Virginia, as a volunteer in the Revolution under the Company of Captain William Harburt, James Newell was the Lieutenant, he belonged to the Regiment of Col. Campbell. After joining, he was marched against the Shawnee Indians and continued in the service against the Indians until peace was made with the Shawnee's in November. About 15 days after his discharge, he was called back into service again under Captain Campbell and marched against the Indians and Tories. In Mythe County in August of 1779, he again served as a volunteer under Captain James Newell in the Regiment of Colonel Lynch and was marched to defend the Lead Mines in Virginia from the Bostin? Indians and Tories.
